Claude was the eighth and youngest child of John William and Alice Vaughan, he was born in the first quarter of 1899 in Goldalming, Surrey. His father John William was listed as being a furrier by occupation.
The 1901 Census reveals that the family resided in the Parish of All Saints in South Wimbledon.
The 1911 Census records that John William and Alice had been married for a total of 27 years and that the couple had a total of 8 children, all of whom were still alive. At the time of the Census, only 5 of the children were still living with their parents at 86 Blackshaw Road in Tooting.
Claude’s service record shows that he enlisted in the reserves on the 30th 0ctober 1916. 0n 22nd February 1917, at the age of 17 years and 10 months, Claude transferred in Wimbledon to the Norfolk Regiment. His service record reveals that he now resided at 19a Grenfell Road in Mitcham and that he was now employed as a warehouseman. While he was stationed in Colchester, on the 30th July 1917, he was confined to barracks for 4 days for not complying with orders. By the 13th January 1918, his service record reveals that he was in Calais

Claude was killed in action on the 21st March 1918. He is commemorated at the Arras Memorial.
