James Patrick was born in the last quarter of 1894; he was the third child of Patrick and Jane Murphy. The Census reveals that his father who was born in 1858 was born in Lanarkshire and his mother Jane was born in Rainham in Kent; the couple had been married for a total of 22 Years.
By 1911, James, who was a plasterer by occupation and Jane had a total of 4 children were living in 5 rooms at 55 Sabine Road in Battersea. Their son 16 years old James Patrick was employed as a boy messenger for the GPO.
