Herbert Richard Pittock was the son of Richard Thomas and Catherine Pittock and born in St Lukes Middlesex. At the time of the 1881 Census, his father was described as a cheese monger assistant and Richard was 2 years old. The couple also had another son called Sydney, age 8 months old who had died by the 1901 Census. The 1901 Census reveals that Richard Thomas, the father was employed as a salesman and by then the couple has 2 more daughters, Catherine age 6 years and Mildred aged 1 year.

Herbert Richard attended North End Road Infants School and afterwards attended Ackmar Road School from 12th December 1887 until 30th0ctober 1888.
In the summer of 1908, Richard married Ethel Louise Lewis. The 1911 Census reveals that by then the couple had been married for 2 1/2 years and had their daughter Marjorie age 18 months living with them as well as Eliza Lewis who was described as a visitor of independent means.

During the First World War Herbert Richard enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery and died of his injuries on the 22nd June 1918 and was buried in Beacon Cemetery at Sailly-Laurette in France.
