George Powell was the son of Thomas and Alice Powell in 1890. 0n the 1891 Census, he was 9 months old, the youngest of five children. His father Thomas was employed as a station boiler stoker.

By the 1911 census, Thomas and Alice Powell had been married for a total of 32 years and had a total of 10 children, 8 of whom had survived and with 2 children who had died in their early years.

George Powell enlisted after twice being rejected and on the conclusion of his training was retained on important duties at various stations. He was not successful in securing his transfer to a fighting front but did much valuable agricultural work until he fell ill. He unfortunately died at Albert Hall Hospital in Nottingham on 2nd December 1918
