Additional Information
Noel was born in India in 1891, where his father Henry was working for the Great Indian Peninsula Railway. The family was based at Lonalva, a hill town between Bombay (now Mumbai) and Pune.
He had 2 sisters, Elma born in 1892 and Muriel born in 1897. Elma was later married in Lonalva, but Muriel died aged 23 and buried in Sewri, Bombay.
It seems that Noel went away to school in England as there is a record of him returning in 1908 when he would have been 16.
At the outbreak of war, Noel joined the Indian army Reserve of Officers (IARO) with the 2nd Queens own Sappers and Miners (previously the Madras Sappers and Miners).
His battalion did fight in France and Flanders as well as in the near east. They were responsible for digging trenches and tunnelling. He was promoted from 2nd lieutenant to Lieutenant on 5th February 1916.
Soon after that he was recorded as having died at St. Pancras hospital, aged 24 and later buried in Morden Cemetery.
