James Coffield was born in West Ham c. 1878 to James and Rosetta Coffield.
On Christmas Day 1898 he married Alice Howard in the Church of St Andrews, Earlsfield. He was a Lithographic printer and Alice was a domestic servant at the time of the wedding.
James and Alice settled in Burtop Road, Wandsworth and their first son James George was born c. 1900 and John born c. 1902 plus three daughters Alice, Violet and Ethel. They had moved to 4 Headworth Road, Garratt Lane, Wandsworth by 1911.
The family moved back to Merton to 68 Cavendish Road Colliers Wood and James enlisted as a Sapper in the Royal Engineers “G “ Company. He was discharged from the army on 20 June 1916 and died on 14 September 1916. He is commemorated in Wandsworth Cemetery on Screen Wall F B 18 8 and at Christchurch Colliers Wood.
