Additional Information

Peter was born in Marylebone in March 1879 to Henry Cooper and his wife Ann.

He married Beatrice Emmeline Davis in All Saints Church, Battersea on 28 October 1898, just a month after the birth of their daughter, Beatrice Ethel. Initially they lived at 12 Victoria Place, Battersea which was probably Beatrice’s family home, before moving to 43 Brooklands Road, Lambeth by the time of the 1901 census.

Peter and Beatrice went on to have three more children: Grace was born on 10 February 1902, Peter on 1 July 1903 and Edward on 19 July 1905. Tragically, their elder daughter, Beatrice, died on 20 October 1913, aged just 15.
Peter enlisted in the Army on 9 August 1915. By then the family were living at 30 Denison Road, Merton and Peter was a labourer. They later moved to 13 University Road.

His enlistment papers show that he was aged 38 years and 5 months, was 5ft 8ins tall and weighed 138 lbs. He had a scar over his right eyebrow and a heart tattoo on his chest.

He joined the 708 MT Company of the Royal Army Service Corps, service number T4/126919. His records state that he undertook “usual duties” and that he was sober, reliable and intelligent.

He died in hospital in Yugoslavia of malaria on 22 December 1918 (some records show 24 December but this could have been when his death was reported)
