Richard and Emma Cox became parents for the first time on 26 October 1887 when Herbert Ralph was born. Herbert was baptised in St Mary’s Battersea on 25 November 1887. He grew up in Battersea and had three younger sisters, Nellie, Matilda and Dorothy. He went to Mantua Street School from 20 April 1896 and at that time was living at 110 High Street Wandsworth.

By the census in 1911, Herbert had enlisted in the army, service number 8645, and was serving in India with the 1st Battalion of the Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.

During the First World War Private Cox served in Mesopotamia (Iraq) and is believed to have died on 16 August 1916. On his war gratuity record it states “Officially accepted as dead between 1/31 August”.

By the time of his death his mother had died and his father was living at 44 Warren Road, Colliers Wood.

Herbert is buried in the Bagdad (North Gate) War Cemetery XX1.B.42and commemorated in Christchurch, Colliers Wood.
