Additional Information
Bertie was born in the summer of 1878 in Walworth, London. His parents were Paul Antonio and Ellen Dinelli. Bertie was baptised on 16 April 1884 in St John the Divine, Kennington along with his elder brother Horace, sister Ellen and brother Leonard. We believe Leonard died young as there is no further record of him but the 1911 census states that the family had lost two children. Bertie also had a sister Ada who was born in 1886.
The family moved around quite a lot over the years, living in Wyndham Road, Walford at the time of the christening, 46 Liverpool Street by 1881 census, 61 Bishops Road, Camberwell by 1891 and in Mitcham by 1901. The 1911 census shows that Bertie was a Grocer’s assistant and was living with his mum in Littleton Road, Laleham, Middlesex but by the time of his death in 1916 the family home was 2 Marlborough Road, Colliers’ Wood.
Bertie appears to have enlisted late 1915/early 1916 at Wimbledon. He joined the 8th Battalion of the Queen’s (Royal West Surrey) Regiment and fought in the Battle of the Somme where he was killed on 6 September 1916. He is buried in the London Cemetery, Longueval, Departemente de la Somme, Picardie and commemorated in Christ Church Colliers Wood.
