Additional Information
William was born in Mitcham in 1885. He was the eldest of a large family and his parents Henry, a bricklayer, and Mary went on to have Harry, born 1887; Thomas, born 1889; Anny born 1894; Christopher born 1898; Albert born 1899 and Jessie born 1901. The family lived in Ravensbury Grove, Morden Road, Mitcham.
When William left school he followed his father’s trade of bricklaying and on 6 August 1905, aged just 20, he married Miriam May Pocock in Christchurch, Mitcham. They had two sons, Leslie was born in 1907 and William in 1909 and three daughters, Irene, Edith and Lillian. They initially lived at 12 Robinson Road, Colliers Wood, later moving to 12 Swains Lane, Lower Tooting.
In 1916 William enlisted in the 9th Battalion of the London Regiment (Post Office Rifles) as a Rifleman and is likely to have fought at Ypres and at the Somme.
He died at home on 14 February 1919 and is buried in the Mitcham Burial Ground, Church Road, Plot VIII.77
