Additional Information
Alfred was born in Clapham to William John (known as John) and Louisa Mary Godfrey in 1888. He had three older brothers, William, born 1878, Sydney born 1884 and Charles born 1887. He also had a younger sister Mabel who was born in 1891 but appears to have died young.
They lived at 17 Rectory Gardens, Clapham at the time of the 1891 census but by1901 his father had died and the family were living at 91 Manor Street, Clapham. By 1911, William had moved out but Sydney, Charles and Alfred were still living in the family home which was now 51 Warren Road, Merton. They also had an 11-year-old boarder Edward Taylor. Alfred was a Stock Broker’s clerk.
Alfred enlisted in Walthamstow in the 7th Battalion of the Essex Regiment, service number 2725. The Regiment concentrated on coastal defence services until May 1915 when they were ordered to prepare for overseas service. Embarkation took place at Liverpool and Devonport between 20th and 30th July and by 11th August 1915 Divisional H.Q. and ten infantry battalions had landed at Suvla, Gallipoli.
Alfred died of wounds on 31 August 1915 and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial and at Christchurch, Colliers Wood.
