Additional Information

Sidney was born in Godalming, Surrey on 8 March 1897 and baptised in the Church of St Peter and St Paul, Godalming. His parents were William and Ester and they had a total of 7 children, 4 girls and 3 boys.

The family were living at 21 Latimer Road Godalming at the time of the 1901 census but had moved to 22 Hamilton Road, Wimbledon by 1911. Sidney went to Rutlish School but left at 14 and was working as a fishmonger’s assistant.

He joined the reserved forces in June 1912, possibly lying about his age, and was released to enlist with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders on 27 May 1913. He was 5ft 8.5ins tall, with a 35in chest and weighed 132 lbs. He had small scars on his right elbow and left cheek.

His service number was 1210 and he was part of the 2nd Battalion which embarked from Southampton on 10 August 1914.

He was killed in action on 10 November 1914. His family had moved to 157 High Street Colliers Wood and apparently moved on again as there is correspondence showing the difficulty in locating his father in order to forward Sidney’s medals.

Sidney was 17 years old when he died and he is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium, Panels 9 and 10 and at Rutlish School.
