John was born in Fulham on 12 August 1896. His parents, Robert, a wood turner, and Lydia, had 11 children, two of whom died young. John was the second eldest: his older brother Robert was born in 1895 then came Thomas, Lily, Henry, George, William and twins Florence and Leonard.
In 1901 they were living at 61 Beechcroft Road, Wandsworth and on 24 April 1907 Robert, John and Thomas all enrolled at Fircroft Road School.
By 1911 the family had moved to 7 Dryden Road in South Wimbledon where they all squeezed into a 3 room dwelling. John attended Rutlish School.
John joined the 1st Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment as a Private, service number 7315. He died on 20 April 1915 and is commemorated at Rutlish School and on the Menin Gate, Ypres.
