At the 1911 census he was living with his parents, Arthur and Hannah, and five of his siblings, George, Albert, Harry, Ethel and William, at 14 Wilton Road, Colliers Wood. This was an eight room house and they also had a lodger living there.
In addition to the six siblings living at home a further three were not present when the census was taken and two more had died.
Arthur’s father was a decorator but when Arthur left school he went into the Motor Trade.
He enlisted at Wimbledon on 23 April 1917, aged 18 and joined the 2nd Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment/Duke of Cambridge’s Own.
His medical record shows that he was injured whilst training at Gillingham but went on the reach the front. He was reported missing on 24 April 1918 and his death from pulmonary tuberculosis in a German War Hospital 1/59 took place on 2 October 1918, being reported in the official German Lists of the Dead on 29 October.
