Ernest was born and bred in Wimbledon. The 1881 census shows him, aged 5, living with his parents Samuel and Elizabeth, and his older siblings, Flora aged 13, Henry aged 12 and Alice aged 6 at 13 West Place.
By 1891 he was lodging at 41 Denmark Road and working as a painter.
Ernest married Ellen in 1906 and they had two sons John, born 1907 and William born in 1908. Ernest was working as a painter decorator and in 1911 the family lived at 11 Cochrane Road in a 3 roomed flat.
At the outbreak of war, Ernest enlisted in Kingston on Thames. He was a private in the 9th Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment and was killed in action on 26 September 1916. His name is carved on the Loos Memorial in the Dud Corner Cemetery.
