William Reuben, who was born in 1898, was the fifth child of Thomas and Annie Pegg. His parents, Thomas and Annie, had married in the first quarter of 1891 and his father Thomas, according to the 1901 Census, was employed as a furniture gilder. The family, children Ellen, Frederick, Harold, Charles and William all resided at 149 Chestnut Road, Bushey Mead in Merton.

By 1911, the family had moved to 61 Havelock Road in South Wimbledon. The census reveals that Thomas and Annie had been married for a total of 19 years during which the couple had 7 children, of which two had died in infancy. William Reuben was still at school in 1911 and now had a younger sister, 7 year old Lilian.

William Reuben’s service record is not available through Ancestry but he enlisted at Holborn in the Machine Gun Corps and was killed in action on the 3rd August 1916 at the age of 18 years.

He has been commemorated at The Thiepval Memorial.
