Herbert was born in Lewisham in 1891. His father Frederick was a labourer and the family, mother Alice and younger siblings Frank, Ethel and Rosetta, together with two boarders, all lived at 4 Bathurst Villas, Cavendish Road, Colliers Wood.

Herbert was a labourer when he left school, later qualifying as a Fitter and he married Ellen Grace High in Christ Church Clapham on 25 May 1913.

At the outbreak of war, Herbert went to Wimbledon to enlist in the 8th Battalion of the Rifle Brigade as a Rifleman. The 8th Battalion was formed in August 1914 and mobilised for war in May 1915 when it landed in Boulogne and engaged in various actions on the Western Front including the German gas attack at Hooge.

Herbert was injured and died of his wounds on 1 December 1915. He is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery in Belgium.
