Additional Information

John was born in Walthamstow in about 1894, the son of William Rees and Alice Roberts. His father worked as a clerk and seemed to travel occasionally, as he was recorded as being away in Ipswich on the 1901 census. The family was living in Tooting Graveney in 1901, but had moved to a six room house at 71 Park Road in Colliers Wood by the time of the 1911 census.

John was the oldest of seven children, with younger siblings Elizabeth, William, Grace, Stanley, Sidney, and Doris. Prior to the war, he worked as a camera maker, and his sister Elizabeth appeared to work for the same company, as a packer.

John enlisted in the Royal Fusiliers, and was sent to the Western Front on 6 March, 1915. He was killed during the Battle of the Somme on 8 July, 1916, and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
