Henry Lionel Harris was born on 2nd August 1882. He was the second son of Henry Graham and Mrs Harris of Raynes Park. He attended a prep school in Brighton and at the age of 14 he entered King's College School. In 1901/2 he studied engineering at Kings College London. He entered the firm of Branwell and Harris in England and afterwards worked for them abroad. In March 1910 he went to the Argentine where he was employed in the laying of new cables for the Western Telegraph company. Later he set up on his own account as a Contracting Engineer.

In June 1912 Henry married Grace Bertha, 4th daughter of Mr and Mrs Cassels of Buenos Aires and Hampstead. When war broke he left Argentine on 29th November 1914, at the age of 32, and returned to London on the “Highland Pride” with his wife (26) and children Elvina (19 months) and Frances (5 months). In January 1915 he joined the University of London Officers Training Corps, obtaining a commission in the Royal Engineers on March 4. He left for the front on September 27.

Henry was wounded when in command of a Working Party near Armentieres on 28 November 1915. He died of wounds on 1st December 1915 after the amputation of a leg. He was mentioned in despatches.

Second Lieutenant Harris is buried at the Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord and is also commemorated on the King’s College School memorial.

He left a widow, two daughters and a son.
