Additional Information
Additional Information: Son of Alfred William James Cook, of 143, Leytonstone Rd., Stratford, London. He was baptized at St. Philip, Battersea, on February 2, 1898. His mother was called Amy Ann, and his father worked as a railway porter. The family lived at 30 Lambourne Road, Clapham. In 1901, the family was still living at 30 Lambourne Road, in a house they appeared to share with Alfred’s widowed mother and his brother’s family. Alfred was specifically listed as a ticket collector.
The 1901 Census reveals that the couple had 5 children and by the 1911 Census, Alfred and Amy had been married for 19 years and that Harold had ten siblings; Alfred, Annie, and Ellen were older, and Albert, Leonard, Mary, Frederick, Stanley, Sidney, and Charles who were younger. Harold was still attending school in 1911, when he was 13, and the family lived in an 8 room house at 2 Archway Place, Clapham Common.
The National Roll 0f Honour reveals that he volunteered in November 1914 and after training was retained on important duties with his unit until 1916 when he was drafted to the Western Front. The hardships of war, however, were too much for his strength and after being seriously ill he was discharged in June 1916 as physically unfit for further service. He holds the General Service and Victory Medals.
