Hugh Fitzjohn Simpson was the son of John (Abel) Chapman Simpson and Sarah Reeve Simpson of Whitby in Yorkshire. He was born in the last quarter of 1881. His mother Sarah Reeve died on the 6th April 1890 at Fairmount Priory Road in Bournemouth.
The 1891 Census reveals that 9 year old Hugh Fitzjohn was living with his grandparents at 91 Meadowfield and their 2 daughters and his father along with their 5 servants, his 74 year old grandfather Henry was described as banker and landowner in the 1881 Census.

Very little is known about his early life but the 1901 Census reveals that at the age of 19 years, that he was a student at Sandhurst Royal Military College in Berkshire. His father John, a solicitor, died later that year at the age of 40 years in 1901. Hugh Fitzjohn was admitted to the St Pancras Workhouse in 1908-1910 at the age of 27 years.
He enlisted on the outbreak of The First World War on the 11th August 1914 and was tragically killed by a lorry on Kennington Park Road in London on the 14th August 1914.
At the time of his death, he left an estate of £2-4s-0d. to his uncle Major Arthur Simpson who was listed as next of kin.
