Hugh Fitzjohn Simpson was the son of John (Abel) Chapman Simpson and Sarah Reeve Simpson of Whitby in Yorkshire. He was born on 22 November 1881 and baptised on 19 December 1881. He had a younger sister, Elsie and a brother Arthur who died as a baby. His mother Sarah Reeve died on the 6th April 1890 at Fairmount Priory Road in Bournemouth.
The 1891 Census reveals that 9 year old Hugh Fitzjohn was living with his grandparents at 91 Meadowfield along with two of their daughters, his father, sister and their 6 servants, his 74 year old grandfather Henry was described as banker and landowner in the 1881 Census.

Very little is known about his early life but by the 1901 census Hugh was studying at Sandhurst. He apparently suffered from mental health problems as he was admitted to hospital and his name appears on the “Lunacy Patients Admission Register”. He was an inmate from July 1910 to May 1912 when he was discharged “recovered”.
He enlisted on the outbreak of The First World War on the 11th August 1914 and was tragically killed by a lorry on Kennington Park Road in London on the 14th August 1914.
At the time of his death, he left an estate of £2-4s-0d. to his uncle Major Arthur Simpson who was listed as next of kin.
