William Whitbread was born during the third quarter of 1887. The 1891 Census reveals that he was the third child born to 30 year old Samuel, who was employed as a costermonger and 26 year old Jane; the family lived at Dryden Road in Croydon

The 1901 Census reveals that although the family still lived in Dryden Road, Samuel who was now employed as a general labourer, and Jane had another five children at home.

By the time of the 1911 Census, William had left home and was employed as a bricklayer living with William Alford and his family as a boarder.
0n August 1st 1914, 27 year old William Whitbread, who was resident at 170 Canterbury Road, married 22 year old Harriet Ellen Hyder of 13 Prussia Place, Nursery Road in Mitcham. The couple were married at Christ Church in Mitcham.

The bride’s father William Horace Hyder was a deceased plate layer, the groom’s father Samuel Whitbread was now employed as a carman.

William enlisted in Mitcham and although his service record is not available, he is known to have served with the South Wales Borderers 1st Battalion as listed below:

S. Wales Bord. Pte. 44351 Infantry Base Depot, 1/S. Wales Bord., S. Wales Bord. Lewis Gun Course, 1/S. Wales Bord., 1/S. Wales Bord.

He was killed in action in Belgium and is commemorated at Tyne Cot Memorial
