Walter James Young was born in the second quarter of 1889 and baptized on July 28th 1889 at Christ Church in Mitcham.
His father, James Edward Young was born in Hazelmere in Surrey and married Alice Bicknell at Farnham in Surrey in 1882.

The 1891 Census reveals that James Edward was employed as a general labourer. By then, the couple had 3 children, Carrie, Arthur and young Walter.

The 1901 Census reveals that James Edward was now employed as a gas stoker and that his daughter, Carrie, now aged 17 years was working as a laundress. Arthur, a year younger does not appear to be employed. Walter aged 12 years and his sister, Gertrude was aged 4 years.

The 1911 census reveals that the couple had been married for 29 years and lived at 9 Phipps Bridge Road in Mitcham Surrey. 0nly Arthur aged 25 years, now employed as a carman and Gertrude was working as a laundress.

Service records for Walter James Young are not available, except that he enlisted at Kingston-upon-Thames in the Border Regiment, 1st Battalion and died of wounds in the Balkan theatre on the 26th September 1915. He has been buried at Mitcham Church Road burial ground.
