Arthur John James Mullen was the eighth surviving child of Robert Wiliam Mullen and Mary Jane Green, his parents had met and married in India on the 5th of December 1861 at St John’s Church, Bellary, India. 0ne family tree places his birth as being on 29th November 1878 at Mercara in India. His father Robert William was a master sergeant in the Royal Horse Artillery from the 5th November 1846 to 27th July 1875.

Arthur John James’s service record is not available through Ancestry. He married Kathleen Winifred Steele at Bangalore, Madras in India.

His widow, Kathleen, wrote asking for a pension, gives his service history as follows:
He was a gunner serving in India 10th April 1897 to 18th September 1899.
S. Africa. 19th September 1899 to 14th 0ctober 1902.
India. 19th 0ctober 1902 to 21st September 1914.
France. 22nd September 1914 to 3rd March 1915.
Home. 4th March 1915 to 3rd December 1915.
France. 4th December 1915 to 6th 1916. He was discharged on the 25th December 1916 as being unfit for military service because he had contracted TB which according to his widow while he was on active service in France. His widow asked for a free warrant to be able to return to Bangalore with her child and her sister.
