Percival Barnes was the third child of James and Maria Lena Barnes. His 28 year old father James had married 23 year old Marie Lena Dubach who was employed as a domestic servant on 2nd August 1891 at their local parish church in Surrey.

Percival was baptized at St Mark’s Church in Walworth on the 14th May 1899. Baptismal records that his father James was employed as a cellerman. The family resided at 10 Borreth Road in Walworth Newington.

The 1901 Census record that the Barnes family still resided at 10 Borreth Road.

By 1911, the Barnes family now resided in a 5 room cottage at No 1 Frederick Cottages in Crown Road in Morden. Lina and James had a total of 8 children of which 2 children had died in early childhood and that 6 children had survived. Percival the age of 13 years was still attending school.

Percival enlisted as a private in the East Surrey Regiment at Kingston upon Thames and was killed in action on the 1st December 1917 at Cambrai.

His name appears on one of the panels in the Lychgate at St. Lawrence Church, Morden, which serves as the parish war memorial, and also on a brass plate in the Assembly Hall of Morden Primary School.
