Norman Ward Burden who was born on the 27th 0ctober 1895 in Bermondsey, London was the second son of Edward and Elizabeth Burden.

According to the 1901 Census, the Burden family were residing at West Bromwich with Edward Burden who was an engineer by occupation away for the night as a boarder.

His mother, Elizabeth Burden died in 1902 and was buried on 9th July. Burial records reveal that the Burden family resided at 287 Chapter Road in Willesden Middlesex.

His father Edward married Eva Millard, a domestic servant, at St Neots in Huntingdonshire during the second quarter of 1904

Norman attended Enfield Road School with his brother from the 1st of May 1905.

By 1911, Edward and Eva had been married for 7 years with a total of 4 more children. The 1911 Census also reveals that Norman was now 14 years old and employed as a junior clerk

The date of Norman enlisted in the Royal Marines Light Infantry is not available. The cause of death has been recorded from Broncho-pneumonia in Chatham on the 8th February 1919. He has been buried at the New Cemetery in Gillingham in Kent and is commemorated at St. Lawrence’s Church, Morden, where his name appears on one of the panels in the Lychgate which serves as the parish war memorial.
