Twenty year old Henry Thomas had married 16 year old Emma Bayliss on the 25th December 1859 at Hanborough 0xfordshire.

Arthur William was the 8th child of Henry and Emma Greenway. At the time of his birth, the family lived in Long Handborough, Oxfordshire; his father was employed as a general labourer.

By 1891, the Henry and Emma Greenway were now residing in Morden, Surrey with their 10 children. The 1901 Census records the Greenways still residing at 1 North Cottages in Morden with 6 of their children. Their son Arthur at the age of 18 was now employed as general labourer.

Sixty two year old Henry Thomas died in the last quarter of 1901; his death was registered in Croydon.

The 1911 Census reveals that 29 year old Arthur William who was now employed as a builder’s general labourer living in Worthing Sussex.

Arthur William married Ada Emily Haslett who had been employed as a servant in a civil ceremony on the 5th November 1915 at Kingston Registry 0ffice. At the time of his marriage he was residing at 11 William Road in Wimbledon.

At the age of 34 years Arthur William enlisted on the 22nd June 1916 at Kingston. His service record reveals that in civilian life he had been employed as a labourer. At the time of enlistment, he was recorded as being 5 ft 5 ins tall and weighed 147 lbs. . He embarked in Folkestone in 1917 and disembarked at Boulogne on the 15th June 1917.

Arthur William served in the Suffolk and Royal Warwickshire Regiments and killed in action on the 27th August 1917. He is remembered at Tyne Cot Memorial in Flanders. He is also commemorated at St. Lawrence’s Church, Morden, where his name appears on one of the panels in the Lychgate which serves as the parish war memorial, and he is also remembered on the Roll of Honour at Morden Baptist Free Church.

Arthur William’s widow Ada Emily was awarded a pension 18s and 9d a week to bring up their daughter Emily May Haslett from the 29 April 1918.
