Leonard Masters was the fifth child of George William Masters and Jane Flood. His mother, Jane has married his father during the third quarter of 1881 at Marylebone. The 1871 Census reveals that Jane was a registered as a pauper or scholar at the Westminster Union Industrial School.
By 1891, the Master’s family had settled down at Dundonald Road in Wimbledon with their 4 children, George William was employed as a dairyman.
The 1901 Census reveals that the Master’s family resided at 72 Dundonald Road in Wimbledon with their 5 children.
By 1911, The Masters ‘family had moved to 27 Chestnut Road in Raynes Park. George and Jane had been married for a total of 29 years and had 10 children, nine of the children were alive and well with one child dying in infancy. Their fifth child, 16 year old Leonard was now employed as a telegraph messenger.
Leonard enlisted in The East Surrey Regiment at Wimbledon on the 7th September 1914. His service record reveals that he was 5ft 10 inches tall and weighed 1221/2 lbs, his physical development was described as fair. He had light brown hair with a freckled complexion and brown eyes. By then his occupation was described as a telephone fitter.
Leonard was promoted to corporal on the 12th December 1914 and then promoted to sergeant on the 5th 0ctober in 1915. He was reported as being missing presumed dead on the 27th January 1916. His death has been commemorated at the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial.
