Leonard was born in 1887
His father was Henry George Powell (b 1831), a gentleman of independent means who had been born in West Hackney. Henry’s second wife Annie bore him six children: Lilian (b. 1882); Florence (b. 1885); Leonard; Charles Henry (b. 1889); Edwin (b. 1893) and Hilda Gertrude (b. 1894). Lilian and Florence were born in Kensington but the family had moved to Wimbledon by the time Leonard was born and they lived at 13 Gap Road for many years.
At the time of the 1901 census, Leonard was an Office Boy but ten years later at the 1911 census he was a Cashier for a Cloth Printers.
Leonard married Bertha Death on 7 September in St Peter’s Church, South Wimbledon and just 5 days later, on 12 September 1914, aged 27, he enlisted. He was 5ft 7ins tall with grey eyes and auburn hair. He was passed fit for service in the Kings Royal Rifle Corps and, after training, was sent to France on 1 April 1915.
He died of wounds on 13 May 1915 and is buried in the Bailleul Departement du Nord, Nord-Pas-de-Calais France
