Harold Victor was the second son of Arthur and Annabelle Burles. His father Arthur who was born in New Cross, London married Annabelle Esther Ray in Lewisham in the last quarter of 1897. Harold was baptised on the 16th November 1899 at the parish church of St James in Mitcham. Baptismal records reveal that his father Arthur was employed as a signal man on the railways and that the Burles family resided at Coldflow farm in Mitcham.

The 1901 Census reveals that 31-year-old Arthur lived with his wife and 2 children at Durham cottages in Western Road in Mitcham. Arthur was still employed as a signal man by the LBSC Railway. Twenty-six-year-old Annabelle was employed by the Gaston family as a general domestic servant.

By 1911, the Census reveals that Arthur was still employed as a signal man with the LBSC Railway and that Arthur and Annabelle had been married for 13 years and continued to reside in Durham cottages with their 5 children. Eleven-year-old Harold Victor was still attending school.

Harold Victor’s service record is not available through Ancestry. He enlisted in the Essex Regiment at Wimbledon and died of his wounds on the 18th 0ctober 1918 at the age of 19 years. He was buried at Mitcham Church Road Cemetery.
