Charles Frederick Case was born in Croydon on 24 September 1900. He was the son of Edward Case, a paperhanger aged 27, and Eliza Case aged 30. At the time of the 1901 census the family was living in Gloucester Road, Croydon. Charles was the youngest of four children. He had two sisters and a brother. By 1911 he was living at 25 Maskell Road, Tooting with his parents, siblings and a 15 year old domestic servant. His father Edward was now a building worker (painter).

At the outbreak of war Charles was two months short of his 14th birthday. It’s not known when he enlisted but records show that he registered in London and joined the 53rd Battalion of the Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment. This was a Young Soldier Battalion which was established on 27.10.1917 at St Albans. It was formed from the 25th Young Soldier Battalion (previously the 10th Royal Sussex Battalion) of the 4th Reserve Brigade.

Private Case’s service number was TR/161757. He died on the Home Front at the age of 18 on 6.11.1918. The circumstances are not known although it is on record that he was repatriated to his home in Wimbledon before his death, which was registered in St Albans. He is buried at the Wimbledon (Gap Road) Cemetery. D.C4.159.
