Robert’s parents were James and Jane (nee Grieg) and he had older siblings James, born 1888, and Margaret, born 1886. They all lived at Pentlands in Mitcham.
Robert was a member of the Royal Naval Reserves but signed up to the Royal Engineers 29th Division Signal Company on 19 November 1914 for “the duration of the war”. His enlistment records show that he was 5ft 7.5ins tall, weighed 140 lbs with good physical development.
He was sent to Egypt, arriving there on 30 March 1915 then, nearly a year later he was sent to France, landing on 19 March 1916.
Robert was Killed in Action on 30 November 1917 and is buried in Gouzeaucourt Cemetery, Dept du Nord aged 27.
He was single at the time of his death and his father had died so his brother James was his Executor and received his effects of £13 10s.
