George and Sarah Chappenden had a big family. 8 of their 12 children survived infancy and they all lived at 10 Ebenezer Road.
At the time of the 1911 census, the eldest child, Alice was a servant, living away from home but the others, George age 16, William, 15, Florrie 14, Albert 12, Lily 5, Jessie, 3 and baby Alfred squeezed into the 4 room house which they called home.
The older children were all born in Walworth but the family had relocated to the Mitcham/Streatham border before Lily was born. Father George was a labourer and 16 year old George Jnr was a boot finisher.
Young George joined the Royal Field Artillery as a Bombadier number 67739.
He died on 8 May 1915 and is buried at Potijze Chateau Wood Cemetery, Ypres.
