William’s family home was in Dean’s Cottages, Common Side, Mitcham . He grew up there alongside his younger siblings James, Nellie and Dennis with his parents Dennis and Harriet. By the 1911 census, his grandparents Mickael and Jane had also joined them. Mickael, Jane and Dennis Snr were from Dublin but the children were all born in Mitcham.
He went to work at the gas works and eventually became a stoker.
He married Ellen Beaver towards the end of 1915 and they had a son, James.
On 15 June 1916, aged 22 years and 4 months, William enlisted at Croydon. He was 5ft 10ins tall with a girth of 37ins and weighed 151 lbs. He joined the Royal Sussex Regiment as a Private, later being promoted to Lance Corporal.
William was killed in action on 5 September 1917 and is buried at West Vlaanderen, Belgium.
