Thomas’s family were all from Mitcham and he grew up living at 1 Hancock Cottages, Commonside. His father, also Thomas, was a firework maker. His mother’s name was Caroline and he had an elder sister, Gertrude and a younger brother, Frederick. Two other children, Edith and William, sadly died young.
Thomas enlisted at Wimbledon and joined the 13th Battalion of the Rifle Brigade. He died of wounds on 16 April 1918, aged 19, and is buried in the Cemetery Etaples in France.
