Charles who was born in Mitcham in 1887 was the third child of Charles and Sarah Avery. Charles and Sarah had married at St Paul’s church in Clapham on the 10th 0ctober 1881. Marriage records reveal that 23-year-old Charles was employed as a Carman.
Charles and his brother James were baptised at the Parish Church of St Peter and Paul on the 7th December 1890, baptismal records reveal that the Avery family resided at 6 Sarah Place in Mitcham. Their father Charles was employed as a gas stoker.
According to the 1891 Census, the Avery family were still residing in Mitcham at 180 Church Road; Charles Avery was employed as a labourer at the local gas works. By 1901, Sarah and Charles had eight children and resided at 7c Aberdeen Road in Mitcham according to the Census.
According to the 1911 Census, twenty three year old Charles was no longer residing with the rest of the Avery family at 8 Southmount St Holbeck Leeds
Charles enlisted in the Scots Guards as a guardsman, his service record is not available through Ancestry, Charles died in Merton on the 31st December 1917 and his death was recorded in Croydon in the first quarter of 1918, he was buried at Mitcham Church Road burial ground.
