John was born in Mitcham in approx. 1892. His Father, William was a Carman and his mother, Louisa, sold flowers. There were six boys in the family, the only girl, Ada, had died as a baby.
John and his brothers William, Joseph, Henry, George and Arthur were living at 44 Fountain Road Mitcham though by the 1911 census Joseph had married and moved out.

John enlisted at the age of 18 years and 7 months. The register shows that he was 5ft 4½ins tall with a girth of 34ins and weighed 114llbs. He had grey eyes, light brown hair and a scar over his left eye. He enlisted in Kingston and joined the East Surrey Regiment.

John was wounded on 3 September 1916 but was back in action very quickly.

1st Battalion, B Company were involved in the Battle of Morval on The Somme and John was killed in action on 25 September 1916.

His remains could not be identified and he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial and in St Mark’s Church, Mitcham.
