Lionel’s parents were George and Mary Hicks. They had a large family : Mabel, Frank, Ernest, Rowland, Lionel, Hilda, Douglas and Gladys and at the time of the 1901 census they were all living at 114 Park Road, Darlington. They had moved around quite a lot as the children were born in various places from Harrow on the Hill, Sudbury in Suffolk, Deptford, Wandsworth and, in Lionel’s case, Slough in Buckinghamshire.
Charles and Stanley were born in 1902 and 1904 and by 1911 George had died and the family were living with Mary’s brother at 14 London Road, Mitcham.
Lionel enlisted at Handel Street as a Private in the 1st City of London Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers.
He was listed as missing, presumed dead on 25 June 1916 but his date of death was assigned as 27 May 1916. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, on his brother Rowland’s gravestone in the Doullens Communual Cemetery and in St Mark’s Church, Mitcham. By the time of his death his family were living in Mitcham and as his father had died, his war pension was paid to his mother.
