Rowland’s parents were George and Mary Hicks. They had a large family : Mabel, Frank, Ernest, Rowland, Lionel, Hilda, Douglas and Gladys and at the time of the 1901 census they were all living at 114 Park Road, Darlington. They had moved around quite a lot as the children were born in various places from Harrow on the Hill, Sudbury in Suffolk, Deptford, Wandsworth and, in Rowland’s case, Deptford, Kent.
Charles and Stanley were born in 1902 and 1904 and by 1911 George had died and some of the family were living with Mary’s brother at 14 London Road, Mitcham. Rowland was a Draper’s Clerk.
He enlisted with his brother Lionel in the 1st Battalion of the London Regiment and died of wounds on 5 June 1916.
He is buried in the Doullens Communual Cemetery and the inscription on his gravestone reads
“Also his brother 5180 L J Hicks 5/6/16 in death they were not divided”
