Edward was born early in 1896. His parents were George, a labourer at a Market Gardeners’ and Annie Elizabeth. While George was a Mitcham man, Annie had been born in Bermondsey and it was there, in St Luke’s Church, that Edward was baptised on 16 February 1896.
Edward had three younger sisters, Ada, Elsie who sadly died aged only 18 months old and Emily.
Edward was born in Mitcham and the family were living at 45 Keens Terrace, Church Road Mitcham. By the 1901 census they were in Clapham at 148 Lyham Road but they moved back to Mitcham by the time of the 1911 census and were living at 1 Douglas Cottages, Love Lane.
On leaving school Edward went to work at the Leather Works. He enlisted close to the start of the war in the 1st Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment.
Edward was killed in action during the battle of the Somme and his body was not found. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial and in St Mark’s Church, Mitcham
