John was born in Mitcham in 1893.
At the time of the 1901 census, his family were lodging at 2 Turner’s Cottages, Love Lane Mitcham but by 1911 they were living at 14 Miles Lane, Mitcham in a 5 roomed house.
His parents were Thomas and Annie Marie Hyder and they had six children – Maud, John, Thomas, Sidney, Rose and Elsie.
In 1911, John was an 18 year old Millworker at Grove Mills, London Road, Mitcham.
Little is known about John’s military career but he was a private in the 1/7th Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cambridge’s Own) and he died on 22 September 1916. He is buried in Combles Communal Cemetery Extension and CWGC have him recorded as Henry Hyder.
