Additional Information

Sidney was born in Mitcham in 1897.
At the time of the 1901 census, his family were lodging at 2 Turner’s Cottages, Love Lane Mitcham but by 1911 they were living at 14 Miles Lane, Mitcham in a 5 roomed house.
His parents were Thomas and Annie Marie Hyder and they had six children – Maud, John, Thomas, Sidney, Rose and Elsie.
Sidney’s baptismal record shows his middle name as Arthur but there seems to have been some confusion when he enlisted as he is shown as Sidney Albert on most military records.
He signed on at Kingston on Thames on 12 May 1916 and joined the 9th Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment. He was aged 18 years and 10 months old, weighed 140lbs and was 5ft 6½ins tall.
In September 1917 a formal report stated that Sidney was missing and then in March 1918 he was reported to have died as a prisoner of war in German hands. The official date of his death was given as 8 August 1917.
