Very little is known about Alexander Harold who was the son of Edward and Charlotte Gates. His baptismal certificate reveals that he wab born on the 23rd of August 1892 in Brixton and was baptized on the 15th of September in 1907. His parents resided at Hope Cottage in Lonesome, his father Edward was employed as a warehouseman.
Alexander Harold enlisted in London and according to the 1911, Census, reveal that a 20-year-old Alexander Harold is serving as a private with the Gloucestershire Regiment at Clarence Barracks in Portsmouth.
By the 19th-December 1914, Lance-Corporal Alexander Gates was serving in France with the rest of his regiment according to his certificate of medals awarded. (His service record is not available to Ancestry) Alexander died of his wounds on the 2nd of September 1918 at the age of 29 years in Salonika in the Balkans theatre of war and was buried at the Karasouli Military Cemetery.
