Additional Information
Very little information exists about the early life of George Walter Gates except to say that it is thought that he was born in 1889 in Lambeth Surrey.
It is possible that he is the George Gates who appears on the 1911 Census travelling to Malta as a 22-year-old private with the Gloucestershire Regiment.
It is not clear where or when George Walter met and Married Rose Taylor or where and when their 2 children were born, his son Edward and his brother John William who was born during the last quarter of 1915.
George Walter was killed in action and was remembered at the Basra War Memorial and at St Barnabas Church in Mitcham.
It is possible that either of his sons Edward who married Hilda Maud Holt in Croydon on the 25th of December 1935 or his brother John William who married May F Woods during the third quarter of 1935 also in Croydon were responsible for ensuring that their father’s name was placed on the memorial panel of St Barnabas’s Church in Mitcham.
