Robert Handley was the fourth son of Emma Hicks and George Walter Handley; he was born in Camberwell during the second quarter of1894. His mother, Emma Hicks, and George Walter Handley had married in Brentwood around 1884.

The 1891 Census reveals that that the Handley family now resided 22 Japtha Road in Wandsworth. George was a carpenter joiner by occupation and that George and Emma’s eldest sons were born in Chelmsford.

By 1901, Emma and George with their seven children resided at 9 Foreign Street with the three members of the Butler family. The two eldest sons of Emma and George were now employed.

According to the 1911 Census, Emma and George had a total of ten children, two of their children had died in infancy. The Handley family resided at 5 Heaton Road in Mitcham with their six youngest children and Emma’s sister 63-year-old Harriet Hicks who was employed as a domestic cook. In 1911, 17-year-old Robert was employed as a shop assistant in a draper’s shop.

Robert’s service record is not available through Ancestry, he enlisted as a gunner in the Machine Gun Corps and was killed in action on the 2nd of August 1917. He is commemorated at the Menin Gate.
