Richard Edward was the eldest son of Ada Elizabeth Quinton and Richard Arthur Holland. His parents married on the 3rd of January 1895 at St Ann’s Church in Tottenham. At the time of their marriage the couple resided at 118 High Road in Tottenham and that 27-year-old Richard Arthur was a glass painter by profession.

Richard was born during the first quarter of 1896; he was baptised with his two younger brothers on the 11th of August in 1901.

According to the 1901 Census, Richard Arthur’s occupation was described as that of a glass painter as well as that of a photographer. Census and baptismal records reveal that the Holland family resided at 112 Beulah Road in Thornton Heath. Richard and Ida had adopted eight-year-old Dorothy Herberte as a daughter.

At the time of the 1911 Census, the Holland family were now living at 7 Cassland Road, Thornton Heath in Surrey. Fifteen-year-old Richard was employed as a book decorator for a book binding firm. His 43-year-old father Richard Arthur occupation was described as that of an ecclesiastical glass painter to an architect.

Richard Edward’s service record is not available through Ancestry. After enlistment, he served as a 2nd lieutenant in the Duke of Cambridge’s own Middlesex Regiment and was killed in action on the 24th of 0ctober 1918 and was buried at Montay-Neuvilly Road Cemetery in France.

Probate of Richard Edward’s will on the 13 August 1919, reveals that his estate of £107 3s 5d was left to his father Richard Arthur who was residing at 96 Melrose Avenue in Mitcham.
