Ernest was born and brought up in Patcham, near Brighton in Sussex. His father, Thomas, was a market gardener and his mother’s name was Annie. They had 5 children, one of whom died in infancy - May was born in 1887; Thomas in 1889; Gertrude in 1895 and finally Ernest born in the first quarter of 1897.
The family were living at 7 Church Hill, Patcham in 1901 but had moved to number 13 Church Hill by the time of the 1911 census and Ernest had left school and was working as a “Gardener’s Boy”.
Ernest enlisted as a Gunner in the A Battalion, 50th Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery, Reg number 163808.
He died of wounds on 15 November 1917. By this time he was living in Streatham. He left his effects, £4 8s 9d to his eldest sister, May (Mrs May Castle). Ernest is buried in Plot 11.D.10 of Zuydcoote Cemetery and the inscription on his grave reads “To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die”
