Henry was the second child of William and Alice Hack (nee Bednell). He was born in 1890 and baptised on 6 April 1890 in St Peter and St Paul Parish Church, Mitcham.
At the 1901 census, he was living with his parents, older brother Charles and younger siblings William Ethel and Alfred at Mizen’s Cottages, St Mark’s Road, Mitcham. There was also a little sister Frances who died aged just six months old.
Henry’s father died in 1910 and by the 1911 census his mother and family had moved to 2 Western Terrace, Western Road, Mitcham. Younger siblings Nellie, Albert and Elsie had been born.
Henry enlisted in the East Surrey Regiment as a Private at Kingston on Thames. He served with the 13th battalion and was killed in action on 9 April 1918. He is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial in Belgium and in St Mark’s Church Mitcham
