John was born in Uxbridge on 24 November 1889. He was part of a large family as his parents John, a farmworker, and Alice had a total of 10 children, three of whom sadly died young. John and his younger siblings Ethel, Alice, Henry (Harry), Lily, Ivy and Rosy grew up in Mitcham living first at 23 Cromwell terrace, Gladstone Road and then, by 1911 census, at 12 Walgrave Terrace, Landsell Road. In 1911 John was a labourer.
He married Lena Maria (born 21 July 1888) and their son Henry was born on 8 June 1917.
John enlisted as a Private G/14131 in the 7th Battalion Queens (Royal West Surrey) Regiment. By 1918, Lena was living at 22 Tamworth Park and John’s father had moved to Holborn Farm, Bond Road.
John was killed on 23 March 1918. His death was assumed as his body could not be identified and he is commemorated on the Poziere’s Memorial.
