William Lawrence and Ellen (nee Furner) had seven children: Ellen, Grace, Gabriel, Olive, Emily, Mary and Bessie. Gabriel was born in the spring of 1881 in Ash, near Aldershot in Surrey.
By the 1891 census the family were living at 6 Runacre Cottages in Mitcham, by 1901 they were at 5 Sibthorpe Road, Mitcham and by 1911 only he and his sister Mary were still living with their parents at 6 Stair Cottages, St Mark’s Road, Mitcham. Both Gabriel and his father were labourers.
Gabriel enlisted in Wimbledon and was initially a member of the Leicestershire Regiment before moving to the Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derby) Regiment 17th Battalion as Private 70344.
He fought in the Battle of the Somme and died on 8 October 1916. His body was not recovered and he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
